Background

In September 2004, Hurricane Francis swept across much of the southeastern US causing widespread flooding. In the path of the storm was Morganton, NC, where this Fairchild 24 was located. The Catawba river, which runs about 1/2 mile away from the airport, quickly rose to more than 25 feet above flood stage and submerged the Silver Creek Airport (NC52) and the Fairchild 24 in about 6 feet of water. The flood was not predicted and floodwaters rose in just a few hours.

When the floodwaters subsided 3 days later, the local pilots began to assess the aftermath. The water had touched a total of 13 aircraft, 6 of which were considered totaled. We began cleaning up the aircraft and airport and the more we cleaned up The Fairchild 24, the more it seemed that doing a partial restoration was a real possability. Just 3 days after the water subsided, we managed to get the engine runing. After a total of 2 years working the aircraft, it was ready to be flown.

The Fairchild 24 now has a freshly overhauled engine, VFR GPS/COMM, and Aeromatic propeller, and new instrumets, among other things. It is still flying at the Silver Creek Airport, but we are keeping a much more watchful eye on the river. Keep an eve out at fly-ins because I may just stop by. Also, look for the airplane at Sun-n-Fun and Oshkosh.
